Old Gumushane Suleymaniye District

Süleymaniye district, also known as the old Gümüşhane, is located 4 km southwest of Gümüşhane city center. The area, where rich gold and silver mines are located, is an important stop and production center on the historical silk road. The settlement, whose history is thought to go back to ancient times, was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1461 and joined the Ottoman lands. The region, which hosted a dense non-Muslim population until the beginning of the 20th century, is one of the rare places where many religious, civil and public buildings dating to the last period of the Ottoman Empire may be seen and the original urban texture is preserved.
