Theatre of Philippi
Philippi:The impressive ancient theater...
Hotel Booking
The ancient Theatre of Philippi is an important monument. Its initial phase is contemporary with the city walls and dates to the years of Philip II (mid-4th c. BC). Following the founding of the Roman colony at Philippi in 31 BC, work was done on the Theatre to transform it into a space for promoting the glory of the Roman emperor and the dynamism of the Roman colony. The alteration of the Theatre at Philippi into an arena for animal fights in the 3rd century AD significantly influenced its form. In the early Christian period (5th-6th c. AD) the Theatre ceased to function as a performance venue.
